Brief Biography: Sargent was considered a leading portrait painter of the American Renaissance for his depictions of Edwardian luxury. He was American by nationality but was born in Italy and lived most of his life in Europe. In the 1880’s he regularly exhibited his portraits at the Salon. Outwardly, Sargent was a lifelong bachelor and he kept his personal life deeply private but scholars argue to this day on his sexual identity with reference to his art’s sensuality.
